A few weeks ago, I wrote an essay about the following equation:
Performance = Happiness * Commitment
Fully knowing that few people take the time to read lengthier posts, here’s the bullet point version:
- Performance is the degree to which we achieve an ideal condition.
- Performance, Happiness, and Commitment are inextricably linked. We can’t perform without Commitment. We can’t perform without happiness.
- We can’t be committed to something over time if we aren’t happy.
- We can’t stay unhappy if we’re deeply committed.
- The equation governs both absolute (“being the absolute top performer”) and personal performance (“reaching one’s personal potential”).
- This is counter-intuitive as people tend to think performance relies upon resources (athletic ability, money, networks, etc.).
- People either get what they need or they find a new “ideal condition” to gauge their performance (they change their commitments.)
