A short post for a quiet Saturday afternoon.
Our education system is a failure. I think a lot about ways to improve it.
When it comes to learning and a student reaching her potential, the most important thing is motivation. This concept gets lost. If you find something you like, and you learn it really well, you’ll learn many lessons. It doesn’t matter so much what the subject is.**
The reason is that some of the most important lessons that need to be learned can be learned in many contexts. In addition to “learning to learn,” Learning is about building mental models for interpreting the world. These mental models are abstract concepts that occur in many places.
For instance, here’s one abstract concept that is very important that occurs in many places: game dynamics.
You can study game dynamics in biology, politics, mathematics, economics, on sports teams, and almost anywhere.
I think we need to really think about this. If it’s true, then it can completely change how we make kids learn. The subject matter isn’t important. Let them learn what they like. With some guidance, they’ll encounter these abstract concepts on the way.

Of course, we need to learn some basic lessons–reading, writing, simple math.
